The movie, which Guest directed and co-wrote with Eugene Levy, is set in the fictional town of Blaine, Missouri, where a group of wildly delusional locals prepare a community theater production for their city’s 150th anniversary. The troupe, led by aspiring director Corky St. Clair, invites a big shot producer the Guffman of the title to see the show on opening night and anxiously await his arrival—it just might be their ticket to Broadway. Are their prayers answered? Well, as the film’s tagline says, “There’s a good reason some talent remains undiscovered.”
Actress Jane Lynch, who has appeared in three of Guest’s films Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration, told MTV News that the writer/director is eyeing a Broadway run for Guffman. Lynch also speculated that since the usually prolific Guest has been quiet lately, he may be through with making mockumentaries. “I haven’t heard any rumblings,” Lynch said. “Parker Posey and I have put our heads together and decided we think it might be over.” Guest’s last film was For Your Consideration in 2006.
