Schoenfeld began his career in a law firm that represented the Shubert theatrical empire and ultimately joined the privately held organization, becoming chairman in 1973 in partnership with Bernard B. Jacobs as president. Jacobs died in 1996, and adjoining theaters on 45th Street were renamed for the two men in 2004: The Plymouth Theatre became the Schoenfeld, and the Royale was redubbed the Jacobs. The Shubert Organization currently owns and operates 16 Broadway theaters as well as a half-interest in the Music Box Theatre.
A limited number of seats for the memorial service will be available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis at the Majestic Theatre on February 9.
