Will Swenson and the cast of Broadway’s current revival of Hair, now playing previews at The Hirschfeld Theater, are now naked on newsstands across New York. The hippie tribe hit the cover of popular city guide Time Out New York in the buff for the magazine’s March 12-18 issue, which can also be viewed online. The show, Hair’s first full Broadway revival since 1977, opens March 31.
Swenson, who plays Berger in the show, joined cast members Ato Blankson-Wood, Allison Case, Bryce Ryness, Megan Reinking, Darius Nichols, Megan Lawrence, Allison Guinn, Kacie Sheik, Kaitlyn Kiyan and Steel Burkhardt for the glossy spread, shot by photographer Dale May. Of course, the cast is now accustomed to taking it all off for the show’s now iconic nudie act one closing.
Hair, written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni with music by Galt MacDermot, was originally produced by the Public Theater. It opened on April 29, 1968, becoming the first off-Broadway musical to transfer to Broadway, where it ran for 1,873 performances. With a score including enduring musical numbers like "Let the Sun Shine In," "Aquarius," "Hair" and "Good Morning Starshine," Hair depicts the birth of a cultural movement in the 60s and 70s as told through a tribe of hopeful radicals living in New York City while war rages in Vietnam.
The show’s 2008 Public Theater revival, which began previews at the Delacorte Theatre on July 22, concluded its thrice-extended run on September 14.
