Scott Hudson's play Sweet Storm is set for an off-Broadway run. The production, produced by the Alchemy Theatre in association with LAByrinth Theater, will begin performances on June 11 at the Kirk Theatre and open there on June 17. It stars Jamie Dunn and Eric T. Miller and is directed by Padraic Lillis.
Set in 1960's Florida during a ferociously approaching storm, the play follows newlyweds Ruthie and Bo as they enter their honeymoon suite in the sky, a treehouse built as a romantic gesture from the young groom to his bride. Bo’s expectations of living happily ever after are soon grounded by Ruthie’s realization that marriage comes with many unforeseen and frightening challenges. The two elevated lovers struggle to fortify themselves against forces both inside and outside of their love nest while presenting a story which challenges perceptions of marriage, faith and love.Playwright Hudson is a current LAByrinth company member who appeared in the group’s off-Broadway production of Our Lady of 121st Street. As an actor, he has also appeared in LAB’s Dutch Heart of Man and The Fairy Tale Project, as well as off-Broadway’s The Glory of Living, Hot Keys and Wild Echinacea.
Lillis is also a current LAByrinth company member. Most recently, he directed the play Umbrella for Alchemy Theater. Additional credits include The Dirty Talk for NYIT and A Line in the Sand for Midtown International Theater Festival.
Sweet Storm will feature scenic and costume design by Lea Umberger, lighting by Sarah Sidman and sound design by Elizabeth Rhodes. It previously played two performances last June as part of LAByrinth’s Public Lab series. The off-Broadway production will play through July 5.
