Published in 1940, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter tells the story of a deaf man named John Singer and his life at a boarding house in a Georgia mill town in the 1930s. A 1968 movie version starred Alan Arkin as Singer and Sondra Locke as tomboy Mick Kelly, who befriends him.
Also on tap at the off-Broadway company is Aftermath by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, who previously collaborated on The Exonerated. The new documentary is based on interviews with Iraqi civilians about the experiences during the current war. No casting or opening date has been set, but the Times reports that the play will be produced in September.
NYTW’s current season will culminate with a previously announced production of Naomi Wallace’s Things of Dry Hours, starring Delroy Lindo, Roslyn Ruff and Garret Dillahunt, directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Performances begin on May 22.
