The off-Broadway musical Rooms: A Rock Romance will end its run at New World Stages on May 10. The show, starring Leslie Kritzer and Doug Kreeger, will have played 20 previews and 64 regular performances at the time of its final curtain. The production was recently nominated for three Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best Off-Broadway Musical.
Despite the closing, the show is set to record its off-Broadway cast recording on May 12. The album, produced by multiple Grammy Award nominee Robert Sher, who also produced the 2008 Time Life release of the recent Gypsy revival, is slated for spring release.
Set in 1970s Glasgow, the show centers on Monica Kritzer, an ambitious singer/songwriter, who meets Ian Kreeger, a reclusive rocker. The two quickly become entangled creatively and romantically. Their music takes them first to London and ultimately to New York City, where they discover the vibrant new music scene and create an intimate partnership, their love deepening while their personalities drive them apart. A five-piece rock band accompanies these two characters as they search for the balance between ambition and happiness.
Rooms features music and lyrics by Paul Scott Goodman and a book by Goodman and wife Miriam Gordon, and is directed by Scott Schwartz. The show has choreography by Matt Williams, scenic design by Adam Koch, costume design by Alejo Vietti, lighting design by Herrick Goldman, sound design by Jonathan Weston Musical supervision, arrangements and orchestrations are by Jesse Vargas.
