The previously announced Second Stage premiere of new Douglas Carter Beane play Mr. & Mrs. Fitch, which was delayed this season due to scheduling conflicts for its director, Scott Ellis, is now slated to fill the company’s second slot in the 2009-2010 schedule. Mr. & Mrs. Fitch had originally been scheduled to begin previews at the theater on June 16, and has been replaced by the musical adaptation of hit comedy Vanities, which begins performances June 30.
Mr. & Mrs. Fitch is part of a developing season at the company that will include the previously announced New York premiere of Anna Deavere Smith’s Let Me Down Easy and the world premiere of Paul Weitz’s newest work, Trust.
The season opener, Let Me Down Easy, explores the world of healthcare from both the patient and practitioner perspective. Directed by Leonard Foglia, the show will begin previews September 15 and open in early October.
Mr. & Mrs. Fitch will begin previews in early 2010. The play follows the story of its married namesake duo, two gossip columnists who find a great celebrity can appear out of thin air when the social circuit no longer provides scandalous news for reporting. The production will mark the return of Beane to Second Stage, which presented the world premiere of his Tony Award-nominated play The Little Dog Laughed in 2006.The world premiere of Trust, written and directed by Weitz, is slated for summer 2010. A dark comedy, the show examines the life of Harry, a rich, married man who doesn’t trust that his privileged life is enough, as he seeks something “real” in the most unlikely of places. Second Stage previously produced Weitz's plays Show People and Privilege.
A fourth production in Second Stage’s 2009-2010 season is yet to be announced.
