Rude and crude
"Sexual provocation and vulgar language taken to the extreme (intentionally) is apparently what is so “funny” about this show. Not funny. It’s too over the top. "

Mean spirited and crass
"Although some jokes were genuinely clever and funny, it was mostly mean-spirited and crass humor relying upon deeply offensive language with profuse use of the "F-bomb". It seemed to me a show for people who need to feel good about themselves by making fun of others. The performers had talent and did their job well, too bad the material was so base and crude. Left the show early."

Not worth the hype
"Honestly I love a good broadway show but this almost seemed like I was being punked. The storyline was atrocious and the jokes did not hit the mark. I don’t understand why this has been on broadway for as long as it has been. It was not funny and the production was high school quality at best. "

Not for me
"The songs were not memorable and the theme of the play was uninspired. I even thought about leaving at intermission. "

Offensive
"If you are a Christian or any person of faith you will be terribly offended by this show. I am surprised it has been successful. The actors are wonderful …voices are great…. But the story is just horrible in it’s disrespect of faith."

More cringe than clever
" The Book of Mormon may have a reputation for shock-value humor, but for me, the execution felt dated, tone-deaf, and frankly uncomfortable. The show leans heavily on caricatures of African people that, even under the banner of satire, land more as stereotypes than commentary. Instead of clever social critique, the humor often felt like it was punching down — and that completely broke the experience for me. While the cast is undeniably talented, it was hard to enjoy their performances knowing they were being asked to inhabit roles built on exaggerated, one-dimensional portrayals. It didn’t feel bold; it felt humiliating — both as an audience member and on behalf of the actors tasked with delivering those lines. I understand the creative premise and the intent behind the satire, but intent doesn’t override impact. The jokes that might have hit differently years ago now feel out of sync with the cultural moment. What’s framed as “edgy” comes across more as outdated and insensitive."

Not worth my time
"To be fair singing & dancing were entertaining but it was too long & got boring. Language and some actions were offensive so definitely not for children. The repeated mention of raping a baby turned my stomach. Disgusting!"

Story was meh, diction was worse
"It's possible there were clever words in the songs and dialog, but we heard very little of them. My hearing is excellent, but I couldn't get the nuances. A few people tittered from time to time, presumably because they had heard or read the words before. We left at intermission. To be clear, the bad language was not a problem."

Blasphemous
"I know it satire but it took too many creative liberties and crossed the line of decency in the first act. "

Raw and distasteful
"Rather raw most of the time and severely anti Christian! I would have walked out early but sat in middle of row. Sorry I waisted my $$. Shameful such a show is a hit with many. "

About The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon follows two young missionaries who are sent to Uganda to try to convert citizens to the Mormon religion. One missionary, Elder Price, is an enthusiastic go-getter with a strong dedication to his faith, while his partner, Elder Cunningham, is a socially awkward but well meaning nerd whose tendency to embroider the truth soon lands him in trouble. Upon their arrival in Africa, Elders Price and Cunningham learn that in a society plagued by AIDS, poverty and violence, a successful mission may not be as easy as they expected.
