Entertainment Weekly

"A spectacular, rather perfect Broadway musical not only grounded in a serious love and understanding of the traditions that make a Broadway musical great but also filled with love for the very flawed, mortal characters who populate this romp."

Entertainment Weekly

Lisa Schwarzbaum

The Hollywood Reporter

"Parker and Stone have created one of the freshest original musicals in recent memory. It has tuneful songs, clever lyrics, winning characters, explosive laughs and disarmingly intimate moments. "

The Hollywood Reporter

David Rooney

The Hollywood Reporter

"While The Book of Mormon packs plenty of blissful profanity, sacrilege and politically incorrect mischief, the defining quality of this hugely entertaining show is its sweetness."

The Hollywood Reporter

David Rooney

New York Daily News

"The show is blissfully original, irreverent, outspoken and hilarious. And all that's tucked inside good -- no, great -- old-fashioned musical."

New York Daily News

Joe Dziemianowicz

The New York Times

"These numbers are witty, ridiculous, impeccably executed and genuinely stirring."

The New York Times

Difficult material at times.
"I thought the actors performance was astounding and they had great vocal range when singing. I don’t think that some of the story material made sense. I’m also not a fan of making fun of or poking fun at real issues pertaining to certain ethnic groups, nor religious groups. With that said I hope those actors perform in other plays that I would greatly support with better theatrical content."

It's a revival meeting morality play with music and dancing
"The tunes are catchy, the show was campy (think Disney World stage production). It's basically a revival meeting (think Gemstones) meets traditional bible themed morality. The theater patrons we encountered applauded enthusiastically, so it clearly has appeal for some audiences. The singing and dancing were very good. My problem lies with the basic story. This show is not for everyone. If you are looking for deep performances, acting, writing, this is not it. The show's superficiality is worn on its sleeve."

Not As Funny as Advertised
"Was not as funny as I expected based on advertisements. Definitely not for kids. Sound system was way overdriving."

We thought the cast was extremely talented but did not enjoy the show.
"We enjoyed the singing and dancing but we were not aware that the show and the words of the songs would be so irreverent. We also found, that, although the theater is old and architecturally beautiful, the seats in the theater were extremely uncomfortable. "

Too course, crude and sac religious
"The actors are good, but try to be funny too hard by being as crude as possible. Unfortunately, even the satire is lost by pushing the limits of what could be a very funny story. Worst of all there is an unacceptable disrespect for God by which anyone with even a slight Christian belief would be offended. "

Probably not
"There were some really funny parts of the show but I have to say that as a Catholic Christian, it was beyond difficult to listen to a couple of the musical numbers that just blatantly disrespected God. If you are a Christian, I wouldn’t recommend this show. God bless!"

Juvenile
"Intentionally irreverent. Lacks any cleverness, but attempts to compensate with vulgarity. Actors do the best they can."

Not as funny as I expected
"I expected the musical to be more intelligent, but the humor was juvenile, one-liners mostly not funny. Musical numbers were witty, but the rest is forgettable. "

Too far . . .
"While I appreciate the mystery we humans are presented regarding religion, I think the idea presented in this play could have been done in a less crude and rude manner!"

Rude and crude
"Sexual provocation and vulgar language taken to the extreme (intentionally) is apparently what is so “funny” about this show. Not funny. It’s too over the top. "

"The show wasn't nearly as funny as we thought it would be. We actually considered leaving at intermission..."

Not worth my time
"To be fair singing & dancing were entertaining but it was too long & got boring. Language and some actions were offensive so definitely not for children. The repeated mention of raping a baby turned my stomach. Disgusting!"

Story was meh, diction was worse
"It's possible there were clever words in the songs and dialog, but we heard very little of them. My hearing is excellent, but I couldn't get the nuances. A few people tittered from time to time, presumably because they had heard or read the words before. We left at intermission. To be clear, the bad language was not a problem."

Raw and distasteful
"Rather raw most of the time and severely anti Christian! I would have walked out early but sat in middle of row. Sorry I waisted my $$. Shameful such a show is a hit with many. "

About The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon follows two young missionaries who are sent to Uganda to try to convert citizens to the Mormon religion. One missionary, Elder Price, is an enthusiastic go-getter with a strong dedication to his faith, while his partner, Elder Cunningham, is a socially awkward but well meaning nerd whose tendency to embroider the truth soon lands him in trouble. Upon their arrival in Africa, Elders Price and Cunningham learn that in a society plagued by AIDS, poverty and violence, a successful mission may not be as easy as they expected.
