A classic with a modern touch
"I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the adaptation of a classic. It was dramatic and spoke to today’s world."

A Powerful Modern Take on Classic Family Plot Twist
"This timely/timeless story of intense familial drama has complexities that require a formidable cast, and Oedipus has exactly that. Every role interweaves with the storyline, and other characters, in both bold and subtle ways…and I enjoyed Lesley Manville, Mark Strong, and Anne Reid taking to heart all of this! Knowing the classic story does not detract from the ultimate unfolding and powerful climax. I highly recommend this play to all who are fortunate enough to attend. Simply splendid. "

"so we saw Oedipus yesterday, phenomenal ! Fantastic ensemble cast play off each other perfectly, and the update of the classic story was perfect. Mark Strong, Lesley Manville and Anne Reid all deserve a Tony award ! We enjoyed it so much we have booked to go back for the final performance ."

Superb acting and a first class Director in Robert Icke.
"If you go to the theater to see an interesting tale presented by a great cast on an imaginative set, Oedipus is your play. It's very talky and worth every word. "

Brilliant
"Ickes brought this play to the 21 century in a devastating way that cannot help but shock us out of inaction. Manville and Strong are excellent and more than that, believable in their ignorance and then pain. Anne Reid solidly takes us back to the now lost 1950s morality. All in all, absolutely brilliant performances, writing, and staging. A triumph!"

Oedipus Redux
"The greatest tragedy is brought to the Twenty-first century. Liberties were taken with Sophocles’ masterpiece, but its inexorable movement to destruction untouched. Superb acting, a cleverly minimalist set, and an unexpected but very useful presence of Merope (Oedipus’s mother). The only bone to pick is the sound. As it is in Studio 54, it was not acoustically balanced as in most traditional theaters. Thus it would benefit from some mic’ing. The writing was superb: it’s a pity to miss any of it."

Spectacular re-telling of the ancient story is a cautionary tale of hubris
"So many things to like! The leads were terrific. Such deeply felt and precise performances. The clock added great tension The sound design was a standout. Almost another character. I knew I wanted to see this show, but I was still a little worried I might be buried under a ‘classical’ interpretation that might be like going to detention. Boy, was I wrong. Thank you to everybody who made this theatrical production possible! "
