A story that needs to be told
"A simple but relevant story that maintains focus on mental health, family dynamics and relationships. Cheadle is the name but the 3 other mains (Edebiri, Young, Ha) carry the show. Ayo makes the transition from the small screen to the big stage in a way that seems this is where she belongs. Her physical presence is felt but balanced against the subtle nuance of a long pause or facial reaction. The topic is heavy but the tone is light due to some fun banter and laughter throughout. It was sweet, humorous, and sad as well. It touched on probably all one's emotions.

A faster moving 'Proof' than the film
"Saw 'Proof', May 30 matinee...I had rewatched Proof the film in anticipation of the play in April. I had seen film in 2005... The play brings the story about in a more cohesive manor and moves quickly - a lot more humor. You could see the the cast was a working team and they all shone. Kara Young was great as Claire - making a less sympathetic character an relatable woman, daughter and sister."

Strong Cast, Great Play-An Off Night or Weak Directing?
"A great play with an amazing cast--and yet. I'm not sure what was going on but the cast were just not in sync. Cheadle and Jin Ha were in the same play--their performances were connected and grounded in the story. Edebiri's performance was all there for the most part but just with a strange time delay--her pauses were so long that at times I feared she might have gone up on her lines. Kara Young brought much needed energy to the play, but at times she seemed to be in a sit-com version of the play.
I know these are VERY capable actors, so I have to assume the director either didn't do his job or tried to take the cast off in a strange direction or that perhaps maybe after the departure of Samira Wiley in March, the cast never regained its footing, but that seems doubtful after this much time.
Also, the mezzanine temperature was arctic with the AC blowing down our necks off and on throughout the play, which made it very hard to stay absorbed in the story.
So, I'm blaming this on the director and the building engineer. I really wanted to like this play. I love this cast. I spent some dough on a train and a hotel, so I was excited about it. I guess they can't all be winners. "

Proof review of Broadway show
"First, I’ll say I’ve watched Don Cheadle for decades, and really admire and respect his work, characters and television performances. I went to see this play because of Mr. Cheadle. Mr. Cheadle was the definite draw for the play, but was not a participant in the vast majority of the play. The storyline in my opinion was slow and disinteresting. We actually were leaving during intermission, but were encouraged by staff to stay for the second half and were told he would return to stage. The plays Star suffering from mental illness was depressive. I would not encourage anyone to see this particular play, but it was good to see him on stage."
