Great Hommage to the classic musicals of the 40-50
"I truly enjoyed every minute of the show. The musicals that they pay tribute to are some of my favorites. It is so cleverly written, especially the music. To be able to bring you back to the musicals that the songs represent is incredible. Each one gives you that hint of the musical it came from, but so original and so unique. It’s funny, fun, and great entertainment for everyone. I’ve seen clips of the TV version, and I’m so grateful that they toned it down so children can enjoy it as well. Schmigadoon was a pleasant surprise!
"We bought tickets to see Schmigadoon on a whim, not knowing anything about the play except that it had won four Tony awards including Best Musical. We are glad that we did!

A witty and funny ( two different descriptors!) musical
"It helps if you get the musical inspirations, which is one of the reasons I wouldn’t recommend it for children. I took my 13 year old nephew who loved it without much of that musical knowledge. He goes to the theatre often.
The performances are first tier terrific. It’s clear they’re having a great time. Sets and costumes are also perfect for the book. An exuberant audience also helped the mood!

"From the opening number, this play seemed to be a re-wrapped version of the play "Oklahoma". But, past the opening numbers, the show shifts where each number moves from play to play. "Music Man", "The King and I", so many more. Some less obvious but all re-written to a story that is both entertaining and meaningful. And, the message delivered is one we need today."

Repetitive first act. Wonderful second act. Very talented cast.
"Some great numbers in opening act but the joke/gimmick, (regular couple in a musical comedy with the man hating musicals) was received very quickly and so after a while became repetitive while the book, the narrative was just treading water. I'd would have cut 10-15 minutes from the first Act. Some very clever lyrics throughout and an exceptionally talented cast from top to bottom. When the second act opens with the school tap dance number the whole piece starts to take off. Gone are most of the repetitive jokes ("oh no, that will cue another song" type thing) and instead the story takes over and one begins to lean in. By the end, with the Angels in America nod, one is moved and involved. This is one of those very rare situations where the second act saved the show rather than be its downfall."

"The ensemble is phenomenal. The dancing is outstanding, and the cast is so strong that they're often more entertaining than the principals.
Betty, however, nearly sank the show for me. The audience around me seemed to adore her, but she felt like Cheyenne from Superstore after twelve energy drinks: loud, frantic, and missing the charm that makes Cheyenne funny.
The two leads have absolutely gorgeous voices, which makes it all the more baffling that they each get only one real chance to show them off. I kept waiting for another big number that never came.
As someone who loves Broadway, I caught nearly all of the musical theater references. The problem wasn't that they went over my head. It was that most of them didn't strike me as particularly clever. They felt more like a checklist of Broadway in jokes than jokes with actual punchlines.
The score is enjoyable enough, but many of the songs seem to exist simply because it's time for another song. I often found myself thinking, "That sounded nice, but why did we just sing that?"
The biggest miss for me, though, was the humor. There are constant sexual puns, double entendres, and wink at the audience jokes. The crowd around me was laughing, so clearly I'm in the minority, but I mostly sat there waiting for something genuinely witty. It never really came.
I didn't dislike the show. I admired the performers far more than the material they were given. If you're looking for energetic dancing, excellent singers, and a talented ensemble, you'll probably have a great time. If you're expecting razor sharp comedy or songs that propel the story, you may leave feeling a little underwhelmed, as I did."
