"Believe it or not, I am 62 years old and I have never seen the movie. Glad I haven’t. Would be constantly comparing the movie to the Broadway production, which was incredible.
The songs, vocals and choreography were raw and a bit rough around the edges, but it was perfect for the raw, rough around the edges story.
The acting performances were superb. Enough said about that.
The staging was simple and understated, but this was, I’m sure, by design so as to not detract and distract from the story and performances.
The special effects were also understated, but highly effective.
I was moved to tears… NO… cried like a baby several times.
I have seen well over 50 Broadway plays. This ranks among the beat. Would definitely see again. Highly recommended!

"Gritty, but also quite emotionally satisfying. I have not actually read the book, but my son had and that is why he wanted to see the musical version. I think that the fact that this show is based on a book considered to be a YA classic, must be what gives it its realism sociologically and it emotional heft. Every single actor in the show did a great job. Loved the songs and the dancing. It is a bit violent, though, so I would not recommend for children. Totally appropriate for teens and tweens, though. "
