"Don't get me wrong, it was a lot of fun, the set and effects were top notch, and the cast definitely had chemistry. Now for my honest thoughts. The story seemed a little flat and kind of rushed. You could tell there was a lot going on between the lines that wasn't developed. The main character's singing was kind of on the level of a pop-star looking for his first breakthrough. It was pitchy at times and often hard to comprehend. Some of the acting overall also seemed a little flat and sort of like something you might see from a small town's local playhouse. The songs weren't very imaginative, almost like a country's best hits review. They were apropos for the setting, but just not thrilling or engaging. I wonder if the cast is maybe getting a little jaded and ready to move on to something else. There was also a lot of R-rated language that didn't really add anything to the story or situations. The actor who played Dallas stole the show whenever he entered a scene and especially when he sang. Unfortunately, it highlighted the flaws I've already mentioned. I'm no expert, and perhaps I was ruined because the last show I saw was Hadestown, which was phenomenal. I gave it three stars, because overall it was fun, and the second act definitely helped to redeem the first. I've said enough. Oh, and it didn't help at all the the A/C was absolutely blasting. It was like a meat locker in there. Everyone was shivering, not just me."

Nice show, but only average
"I think the concept of the story is beautiful, and very touching. The first half of the story felt somewhat boring - not a lot of action/excitement/substance. The second part was far more emotional, exciting and interesting.
I wouldn't recommend this to someone else, but also not too unhappy that we went. It's nice."

A little slow..
"I expected more from The Outsiders - the play was slow and a bit boring. That being said, the big fight scene was very good!"

I heard it was a great show...maybe we just went on the wrong night.
"I liked many aspects of the show, but I didn't at all connect with the lead performer playing Pony Boy. Maybe he was just off his game a little when we were there, but I found his performance very underwhelming. For some reason (and maybe it's just his 'style') he had poor and very 'nasally' diction which made his lines hard to understand. I found it profoundly irritating to listen to him whine every sentence.
Everyone and everything else was outstanding."

Disappointed
"Maybe because the movie made such an indelible mark, I just couldn't get into the musical... There were a few of the actors that gave impressive performances, but one, not so much. Really wanted to like it but just not the musical for me. "

Saw 7 shows this week and this was the one i enjoyed the least.
"As an English teacher, I teach the novel to high school freshmen. In general, they like the book. I never formed an emotional connection with the characters on stage. Something was missing. I saw Othello, Gypsy, A Streetcar Named Desire, Sunset Boulevard, & Juliet, and The Great Gatsby along with a Friday night performance of The Outsiders. I was disappointed. "

A Solid B
"The choreography is absolutely outstanding. The plot, for the most part, is a variation on West Side Story, set in Middle America in the late 1960’s. It wasn’t until the end of the first act that I found myself impressed by the show. The second act was better. Overall, it’s a good show, but not a great show if you’re over 30. What makes it unique are the special effects. See everything else you want to see first, then see The Outsiders. "

Better shows out there
" Has some usual effects fire, rain, gravel stage. The singer who played Cherrie was the best. The dancing was good and creative. I do think there are more exciting shows out there that I would recommend before The Outsiders. This show was not for me. "

Visuals and effects are so cool
"Really liked the rumble scene, beautiful choreography.
Many characters were not consistent with the book, but the show was good. And some of the effects were really cool. "

Just so so for me
"Seemed a repetitive underdog vs society plot with a happy ending after a major traumatic event. Didnt pull at my heartstrings or leave me w any profound thoughts or reflections. Good talent. Only 2 of the performers caught my attention for excellence. The rest were good. "

Disappointed
"So this play was hyped up by so many people. I hate to say it, but i wasn't super thrilled with it. The language was awful! Acting seemed forced by a few of the actors. I did love the special effects with lights and sound. Of the 7 plays seen this week, this was my least favorite. "

Wish i had researched before I went
"The cast was good, singing voices of leads were exceptional. Choreography of fight scenes were moving.
Things I didn't like. The sound track was not moving, there were periods of great harmony which were quickly blurred into a noise either by the sound board of volume adjustments.
The lyrics were unimaginative and the story line all over the place.
Dont bring a person who suffers from seizures as the lighting effects and use of flashlights shown into the audience may bring one on.
I am an adult saying all this, however my daughter who is a teen loved it. She hasnt seen as many shows as I have so that should also be considered.
The message is age old. The haves vs the have nots. Unfair treatment and unfortunate circumstance. Not sure all that had to be put music. I would not see it again. "

Singers Voices Not Strong Enough
"Went to the performance and found that the singers voices were not strong enough over the music. We even sat in the front row of the mid-level balcony. It seems like an old story, but a modern version of West Side Story. The Greasers vs the Socials. Thought this was going to be more contemporary, but the place was still full. The dance numbers were modern though especially with the fight scene in the rain. Otherwise, if I knew what it was going to be what it is, I would had chosen another performance. "

It wasn't entertaining enough
"I liked the people doing the show, this has nothing to do with them, they are very talented. There was too many slow songs, kinda boring for my liking. When I think of broadway musical, I enjoy more dancing and upbeat music. This show was not that.
Did not like the Venue - seats were not comfortable!!!"

Not the kind of show I love.
"I am in the minority, as the energy and enthusiasm of the audience was great, but for me, it was too hokey and predictable and like a Disney or Hallmark movie. The singing voices were wonderful, but I was not worried ever about the characters or the outcome. Sets and lighting was very creative!"

Not impressed
"The story was a bit slow and most importantly I could understand the words when the lead Pony Boy was singing. He didn’t sing loud and clearly so it was hard to understand him , especially in the beginning when we needed the backstory. There were plenty of other performers who sang louder who could have played a better Pony Boy. "

Disappointed
"We were so excited to see this Tony Award winning show. Our excitement soon turned to disappointment. Although the cast was quite talented, the storyline was difficult to follow, as was the dialogue- and we had very good orchestra seats. The choreography was just okay but we cannot comment on the 2nd Act as we left at Intermission. We are avid theatre patrons and when you pay SO much money for Broadway tickets, it is truly disappointing to not enjoy it. Our recommendation is that you choose another show. "

It was just ok!
"I wish I didn't know it won a Tony for Best Play.
Maybe I expected it to be amazing and in all fairness, the actors were extremely talented but I couldn't feel a connect or a flow with the show.
To me there was no stand out song or performance.
I was disappointed but the Broadway experience is always wonderful. "

About
The Outsiders
The winner of the Tony Award® for Best Musical is The Outsiders. This classic coming-of-age story takes you to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1967, where Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade, and their family of Greaser “outsiders” dream about who they want to become in a world that will never accept them. The Outsiders features a “tuneful and soul-bearing” (New York Stage Review) original score, “high-octane choreography” (New York Magazine), and a “sensational young cast” (The Wall Street Journal) that brings the show to life.
