In honor of Valentine’s Day, Broadway.com decided to ask some of the most romantic people we know—Broadway stars—to share their thoughts on the season of love, and the shows that make them swoon.
ANDY KARL (Fiyero in Wicked):
What is the most romantic Broadway show of all time and why?
I recently did a reading of Maltby and Shire's musical Baby. I think that could be my top pick this year. The show is playful at the beginning with couples deciding to have a child, but the decision to have a baby creates a catalyst for the couples to see deep in the core of their love for each other. It's one of the more honest takes on relationships. By the end of the show, you're laughing and weeping at the same time. For my own personal feeling of romance during a Broadway show I would have to say when [wife] Orfeh and I [co-starred] as Kyle and Paulette in Legally Blonde it was pure joy and romance every night on stage together. Something about the idea of dressing up in costumes and pretending to be someone else was... "tantalizing" to say the least.
What character from a Broadway show (past or present) could you fall in love with and why?
I remember when I was a teenager I saw Les Miserables for the first time, when it was on tour in Washington, D.C. When I saw Eponine, this girl begging for love from Marius who wasn't interested, singing "On My Own" I was thinking, "Yo, Eponine! I'll be your guy. I'm cool and I'll take care of you!"
What’s the best Valentine’s Day gift imaginable?
Orfeh and I always have fun going out to a really nice dinner and experiencing really good cuisine. Ever since Top Chef aired, we've had an appreciation for how food can be a romantic and interesting experience. But an iPad would be hot, too.
What advice would you give for having a super-romantic Valentine’s Day?
Laugh and smile and find the goofiness in everything. It's not just about the flowers, dudes (though you better buy them or you'll look like an ass). It's really about appreciating every glorious perfection and every quirk in your loved one.
