Two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Plummer has joined the cast of the forthcoming Hollywood film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s mega-best selling novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Plummer will play Henrik Vanger, the Swedish industrialist who enlists journalist Mikael Blomkvist (to be played by movie star and Broadway vet Daniel Craig) to figure out what happened to his long-missing niece. David Fincher is directing the American movie version of the book, with a screenplay by Steven Zaillian. A December 2011 release date is planned.
Plummer joins a cast that also includes Robin Wright as Mikael’s editor and lover Erika Berger, Stellan Skarsgard as nephew Martin Vanger and Rooney Mara in the central role of tattooed hacker Lisbeth Salander. Wright recently bowed out of an announced Broadway revival of Lanford Wilson’s Talley’s Folly.
A Best Actor Tony Award winner for Cyrano and Barrymore, Plummer has been nominated for Tonys for J.B., Othello, No Man’s Land, King Lear and for his most recently Broadway appearance, the 2007 revival of Inherit the Wind.
