Grey’s Anatomy star and Tony-winning Broadway vet Sara Ramirez has given Latina a rare interview in support of her appearance on the magazine’s March 2011 cover. As Latina describes it, Ramirez “strips down to her underwear in her photo shoot to show the world that she loves her curves.” The full text is not online yet (the issue will be on newsstands February 15), but the magazine promises an in-depth conversation about Ramirez’s battle with depression, the loss of her best friend (former Broadway.com staffer Al D. Rodriguez), her struggles with body image and the on-set controversies at Grey’s Anatomy.
On the subject of her figure, Ramirez is quoted as saying, "There's a whole list of things you could worry about. Are you skinny enough? Talented enough? In all kinds of ways, I used to be really, really hard on myself."
Speaking about depression, Ramirez reveals that at one point, she could barely drag herself to the set of Grey’s Anatomy, which she joined in 2006 as Dr. Callie Torres. "Somehow I managed to do it, but it wasn't pretty. There were days that I would show up to work and come out the side of my face to people who didn't deserve it."
Ramirez won a 2005 Tony Award for her featured performance as the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot. The Mexican-born actress has also appeared on Broadway in The Capeman, Fascinating Rhythm and A Class Act.
