The 66th annual Tony Awards telecast won four 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony held in Los Angeles on September 15. The Tonys took home the Outstanding Special Class Program award, along with Emmys for Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork and Video Control; Outstanding Music Direction (Broadway vet Elliot Lawrence); and Outstanding Music and Lyrics (“If I Had Time,” with lyrics by Adam Schlesinger and music by David Javerbaum). Tony host/producer Neil Patrick Harris will receive an Emmy for his work on the telecast.
In addition to multiple technical categories, Emmys for guest performances were awarded at the September 15 ceremony. Broadway vet Carrie Preston was a surprise winner in the drama category for her role as zany lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni in The Good Wife. Dan Bucatinsky won for playing reporter James Novack in Scandal, thanking his onscreen husband, theater vet Jeff Perry, and his real-life husband, Don Roos. Deadline.com quoted Bucatinsky as saying, “I’m very proud to be a married, out gay man with an adopted child playing a married, out gay man with an adopted child.”
TV icon Bob Newhart won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance as Arthur Jeffries/Professor Proton in The Big Bang Theory. Oscar winner Melissa Leo took home the Guest Actress in a Comedy Emmy for her role as Laurie in Louie.
An edited version of the Creative Arts Emmys will be broadcast on September 21 on the new FXX network. The Primetime Emmy ceremony, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will be broadcast life on CBS on September 22.
