Los Monólogos de la Vagina, a Spanish version of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, has announced the first members of the cast. Miriam Colón, Kate del Castillo and Angélica Vale will appear in the production from May 6 through May 11, with del Castillo, Vale and her mother, Angélica María, performing from May 14 through June 1. Additional casting will be announced at a later time. The play, directed by Jaime Matarredona, will open officially on May 18 at the Westside Theater.
Colón is the founder and artistic director of the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre and the first Puerto Rican artist to be accepted at the Actors’ Studio. Del Castillo appeared in the film Under the Same Moon and the series La Reina del Sur; her upcoming film credits include Guillermo del Toro’s The Book of Life and The 33. Vale is perhaps most known for the role of Letty in the telenovela La Fea Más Bella, the Mexican Ugly Betty. María, referred to as “The Sweetheart of Mexico,” has performed in 61 films, 17 plays and on 63 albums and received the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Latin Grammys.
Based on interviews with a diverse group of women—from a Long Island antique dealer to a Bosnian refugee—The Vagina Monologues brazenly explores the humor, power, pain, wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement hidden in vaginas. The original production played over 1300 performances from 1999 to 2003 at The Westside Theatre. Los Monólogos de la Vagina will be modeled after the current Mexico City production.
