Gus Halper to Make Broadway Debut as Brendan in Sing Street: 'I Couldn't Be More Grateful'

Stage-and-screen standout Gus Halper, who originated the role of Brendan, brother to central character Conor, in the world premiere of Sing Street, has signed on to repeat his celebrated turn in the musical's upcoming Broadway transfer. The previously announced production will begin previews on March 26 and open on April 19 at the Lyceum Theatre. Sing Street will mark Halper's Broadway debut.

"It's always been a dream to be on Broadway, and I couldn't be more grateful to be making my debut in a role I feel so personally connected to," Halper told Broadway.com. "Brendan ranks among the most complicated, generous characters I've ever played. I'm thrilled to be able to share him and this beautiful story with a larger audience."

Known for his screen turns on Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, Jett, Happy! and Dickinson, Halper received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for his off-Broadway performance in Ride the Cyclone.

Halper will appear in Sing Street alongside his previously announced fellow off-Broadway cast, including Brenock O'Connor, Zara Devlin, Anne L. Nathan, Martin Moran, Max William Bartos, Brendan C. Callahan, Billy Carter, Jakeim Hart, Johnny Newcomb, Gian Perez, Sam Poon, Skyler Volpe and Amy Warren.

In other news, Sony Masterworks Broadway has announced an original cast recording of Sing Street. The album will be released digitally on March 26 coinciding with the show's first preview, with the physical CD release to follow on April 17.

Based on John Carney's Golden Globe-nominated film, Sing Street is set in 1982 Dublin, where 16-year-old Conor turns to music to escape troubles at home and impress a mysterious girl. The musical features a book by Enda Walsh, a score by Carney and Gary Clark, direction by Rebecca Taichman, choreography by Sonya Tayeh and musical direction by Fred Lassen.
