The Decca Broadway cast recording of Spamalot was named Best Musical Show Album at the Grammy Awards ceremony on February 09. The recording was produced by John Du Prez and Eric Idle.
Spamalot, which features music and lyrics by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, beat out recordings of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Ghostlight Records, Hair Ghostlight Records, The Light In The Piazza Nonesuch and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Razor & Tie/Ghostlight Records. Spamalot has also received many other honors, including the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical.
In his review of the album, Ken Mandelbaum wrote: "If the Spamalot album is more a good souvenir of the show than a satisfying hour of theatre music, one can at least credit it for sounding unlike any other cast recording I can think of. It may leave some wondering how so much music can amount to so little. Still, the recording is cheerfully absurd and pleasantly giddy. If it's not a distinguished score, it makes for lively listening." The cast recording features original stars Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce, Hank Azaria, Sara Ramirez, Christopher Sieber, Steve Rosen, Michael McGrath and Christian Borle.
The Grammy Awards were presented at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and broadcast on CBS.
