Named for legendary stage and screen actress Helen Hayes who hails from the DC-metro area, the Helen Hayes Awards were founded in 1983 by producers Bonnie Nelson Schwartz and Arthur Cantor with direct input from Hayes. In 1984 the awards organization made its first official introduction with the theatrical community, and has since gone on to honor DC's work for 24 years.
