Broadway Grosses: Holiday Weekend Brings Box Office Fireworks

New Yorkers may have skedaddled over the long fourth of July weekend, but summer visitors put a smile on the faces of Broadway producers, as 17 of 31 shows filled their theaters to more than 90 percent of capacity and another seven titles topped 80 percent. The five top-grossing shows remained steady, and musicals, as usual, were the big attraction. Passing Strange, which announced a forthcoming film version directed by Spike Lee, dipped below the 40 percent mark at the Belasco Theatre. Meanwhile, Broadway said hello to [title of show], which gave its first three previews at the Lyceum Theatre, and farewell to the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which ended its run at the American Airlines Theatre.
