A musical version of the film comedy Kinky Boots is in the beginning stages of development, to be produced by Daryl Roth August: Osage County, among many other shows and Hal Luftig Legally Blonde. "I love the movie and think it will make a wonderful musical," Roth told Broadway.com. Legally Blonde director Jerry Mitchell in in talks to direct; Roth said that no composer or book writer has been set for the project.
The British comedy, released in America by Miramax in 2006, starred Chiwetel Ejiofor as a drag queen who tries to help the head of a struggling shoe company save his business by designing a line of fetish shoes. Ejiofor earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Kinky Boots. Roth acquired the stage rights from Disney, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to Legally Blonde, Mitchell has worked on the film-to-stage productions of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Hairspray and another British comedy, The Full Monty. Roth did not specify a timetable for producing Kinky Boots.
