Kate Whoriskey, director of the Pulitzer Prize winning Ruined, has been named the new artistic director of Seattle’s Intiman Theatre. she will succeed Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher beginning in 2011 after working alongside Sher as co-artistic over the theater’s 2010 season.
"Bart has put this theater in a more national position," Whoriskey told The Seattle Times. "I'm interested in maintaining that."
The position reunites Whoriskey with Intiman, where she worked with Sher on 2000’s The Chairs before serving as an associate artist from 2002-2003, directing The Lady from the Sea and Blue/Orange. Whoriskey cemented herself as a rising star this season with her staging of Lynn Nottage's much-acclaimed new play Ruined. Additional off-Broadway credits include Inked Baby and The Piano Teacher. Regionally, the director has headed up productions at theaters including the Goodman (Chicago), DC’s Shakespeare Theatre and the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville.
Whoriskey is currently an associate artist at South Coast Repertory Theater. The director told the Times she and her husband, Shrek star Daniel Breaker, who will participate in the upcoming Intiman season, will relocate with young son Rory to the West Coast in April 2010.
