Aiming at the Wrong Target
"The Death of a Salesman is a critique of The American Dream. Namely, that hard work and playing by the rules leads to success. Yet Willy Loman's version of TAD is quite different. He believes success comes from being liked. Arthur Miller has set up a straw man. His play is about a delusional man's version of TAD. As such it looses much of its sting as a social criticism. In addition, at three hours, I found my mind wondering. Loman's often repeated delusions don't help. Still some of the writing is brilliant. The play is regarded as a classic and, "Attention must be paid." "
