A pitch-perfect performance of Arthur Miller's masterwork.
"Everyone who took "Dramatic Literature" in school reads "Death of a Salesman" and many have seen more than one production of it - from college to regional theatre, as I have. Seeing this perfectly cast, directed and acted production of Arthur Miller's classic was a poignant joy. I expected Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf to be impeccable, and I was not disappointed. My heart broke with each of their performances. I was also appropriately frustrated with Lane's Willie Loman and his big-mouth grandstanding bluster (so like my own father who used to say, "Sorry to be speaking while you're interrupting me"). I was also blown away by Christopher Abbot and Ben Ahlers as Biff and Happy. And the rest of the cast was outstanding! Joe Mantello deserved the Tony for Best Direction. And the set with that car was impressive, as was the lighting, the costumes, and the sound design.
My only complaint was the difficulty in seeing the actors from our orchestra seats. There isn't enough of a rake in the Winter Garden. My sister and I were swaying back and forth trying to see around heads in front of us."

"The musty, bleak garage set design is a mirror of the stagnant, stained and colorless lives that mark this profound and compelling adaption of Miller's most famous work. Forever, Lee J. Cobb was Willy Loman to me and now because of Nathan Lane's powerful and painful portrayal I will see his face, shuffling feet and forced expression belying the deep disappointment, disillusionment and imminent defeat. Laurie Metcalf rips your heart and guts out and beyond her own flawless performance, watching her while others are speaking is a lesson in master acting. She is all in all the time. The actors playing Biff and Hap earned their parts and it is Biff's wrenching narrative that stays with you long after the final bows."

I better understand Bif now, and that's why I now like the play.
"When I read Death of a Salesman, I thought it was creative, and sound. But I read Bif in a narrow/two-dimensional way. With this production, I actually got to see Bif as a human being. And that changed my entire understanding and appreciation for the work.
