Amazing
"I’ve seen a lot of shows over the past 30 years, but only one has truly stayed with me—Jersey Boys. This was my first Broadway show, and my first time experiencing one on Broadway itself, and it completely blew me away. Jon Bernthal’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. The entire supporting cast—Ebon, John, Jessica, and so many others—brought so much depth and energy that it made the whole experience unforgettable. It was powerful, moving, and something I’ll never forget. Bravo to everyone involved, and thank you for giving me such an incredible experience."

Best Play I've Seen in 10 years - Dog Day Afternoon
"This season of plays launching are star-studded and I am a fan of Bethernal. For that reason I went to see DDA as my 1st play of 2026. I took my wife and sat 9 rows from the front. The energy from the play radiated through the entire Orchestra seating. The set design rotates to give you a Cinematic feel to it. The show is a combination of Comedy, Action and Heart. This is the best play I've seen on Broadway in atleast a decade. If you sit Orchestra there is a level of Crowd Participation (I won't ruin the surprise). The Cast is full of ppl you know from TV that you recognize but don't know their names. It sincerely feels like you are watching a LIVE movie in action. I HIGHLY recommend checking it out. "

Run do not walk to see this play!
"I went in with high expectations and not only did it not disappoint, it exceeded them. Brilliant choices for the actors. Great stage production and use of space. Really loved the music and it brought me right back to the 1970s. True to the movie. Honestly, one of the best plays I’ve ever seen."

Bernthal steals the show in this play based on a real-life botched robbery
"Just saw the play during the preview period on 3/14. Jon Bernthal has “Sonny” already locked-in despite only day 4 of preview performances. His talent shown on the screen is displayed exponentially live on stage. Set design was top notch and beyond creative. Humorous moments in the play had the entire audience laughing and the pop music interludes made transitions seamless. This is a must-see."

Jon Bernthal Nails It
"Attended the first preview on Tuesday 3/10 with my wife. Jon Bernthal as Sonny carried the performance and was spot on with his lines and pacing. The second act dragged a bit, and there are likely some small trims to be done to keep the pacing brisk."

Fan of The Bear? Can't Miss
"Jon Bernthal & Ebon Moss-Bachrach are phenomenal actors whose best display was on the most recent special release episode of "Gary" for The Bear. To get to see them both in person this week playing off a classic New York movie thriller, similar to how Pacino & Cazale had acting history together before playing Sonny & Sal in the film, was very special. Really enjoyed the show, awesome acting and great set capturing the bank & outside. "

Amazing and beautiful
"My Son and I went to see a Dog Day Afternoon Broadway comedy show and My Son and I had an amazing time. The show was very funny and kept me laughing the whole time. The actors did a great job and had a lot of energy on stage. The audience was really into it, which made the experience even better. The theater atmosphere on Broadway was exciting and lively. My Son and I would definitely recommend seeing a comedy show if you want a fun night out. We would go again!"

Old story line
"Play was older, longer, but interesting, had some comical lines, I never seen the movie, so I didn't know what to expect. I did enjoy the play and also liked starting at 1:00 PM and not letting people in after play starts. "

John Berthnal is excellent as Sonny.
"It was well paced with a good mix of drama and some comedy. John Berthnal really channelled his best Al Pacino."

Jon Bernthal is a powerhouse
"The acting was superb and the story was told in a way that complements the movie and stays true to the nature of the characters. Jon has shown his acting depth and prowess. He’d already demonstrated his skills in the small and large screen. With this play, he has taken his career to greater heights. "

Good but not what I expected
"The show was good! Definitely not what I expected. Billed as a crime drama but played as a crime comedy which didn’t really hit right for the crime taking place. Actors played their roles well and the scenery was really cool!"

Not what I expected
"Loved the performances. The tone of the play was very confusing. It was not the drama I expected. The first act was great but everything bogged down in the second act. Very intense and did not match the atmosphere of the first act. It just couldn't find a happy medium."

Material is not a comedy
"The production seemed played for cheap laughs. Felt like inappropriate and insensitive handling of sensitive topics and relationships. Very disappointed."

A Real Disappointment
"I was disappointed with this production, specifically the new script writing of this story of Dog Day Afternoon. I found it corny, hokey and predictable. Although I must give creds to Jon Bernthal. His performance was very good considering the material he had to work with. I also thought the staging and set design was inventive. "

Not ready for Prime Time
"I was looking forward to seeing Dog Day Afternoon and, unfortunately, I didn't like the script at all. The performances, while overtly microphoned, from the lead actors, were excellent. What worked in the film does not automatically translate to a stage adaptation. If, in fact, this is what it was suppose to be. What tone was the author trying to create--and in noting this tone and atmosphere--move from there to decide the kind of story you're telling. There was never any real tension occuring on stage; when it surfaced, it felt temporary and as a reminded within the world of the play, "this is a robbery." But the script is without any tension and the stakes are too submerged to carry any real dramaturgical weight. Lastly, the set does not fit the action. Three cashiers are crowded into the upstage corner in the largest bank lobby I've ever seen, for the time period, in Brooklyn. Empty spaces on the outside can work, occasionally, but here, sadly, it continued to looked as an unimagined space. Good performances from the leads, but this play is a mess--it's can't figure out what it wants to be...faithful to, inspired by, or its own version of the movie. Sadly, the writer hasn't chosen an engaging, tense way to tell the story HE wants to tell. It feels like too many cooks and not one chef. And the set design is absolutely out-of-proportion for an ounce of period reality: when the bank lobby fills the entire proscenium there's something that is disproportionate to the circumstance and its setting. There are a lot of studio apartments that could fit into this bank lobby, which I don't think was the intentional, but unmistakable, visual impact. I wanted to like this show. I didn't. "

A Dog of a Show
"Too long. Too boring. Too many empty attempts at cheap laughs. No opportunity for Ebon Moss-Bachrach to shine. He’s a great actor. Underdeveloped characters. Boring. Should have left during intermission when I had the chance. "

About Dog Day Afternoon

Step back into the sweltering summer of 1972, New York City—a time when the Vietnam War looms large, Watergate headlines flood the news, and one man's desperate act captivates the nation.  A Brooklyn bank hold up quickly goes wrong, and with each gut-wrenching twist that unfolds, chaos ensues that ignites the city as they follow the actions of a man on the edge. Dog Day Afternoon is a raw, gritty reminder of what happens when passion and desperation collide.
