Audra Delivers!
"I had my doubts about Audra McDonald being cast in this role. But after attending the Jan. 29 matinee, she’s not only the best Mama Rose I’ve ever seen on Broadway (beating 1989’s Tyne Daly, 2003’s Bernadette Peters, and 2008’s Patti LuPone), but delivered one of the greatest performances I’ve seen on stage, period!
Audra was spectacular, both vocally as well as an actress. She was really “feeling it” when she sang (especially her raw delivery of the closing number, “Rose’s Turn”), while her range of emotion in playing the part, from maniacal, to delusional, to coquettish, was extraordinary. Audra, like Mama Rose, was a force of nature. The lady proved she has the chops to make this iconic role her own.
While I don’t think her supporting cast was equally brilliant (except for the trio of strippers stopping the show with “You Gotta Get A Gimmick”), it’s hard to shine when performing next to a super nova like Audra. She was transcendent! "
