Gypsy: a dark presentation of a well-meaning, but terrible stage mom!
"I have always wanted to see Gypsy on stage and Audra MacDonald in the starring role was the icing on the cake. I always have loved the music and lyrics. Seeing the songs with the story was eye opening! Audra MacDonald is incredible: both voice and acting skill. She is kind and overbearing as Rose and switched character on a dime! The supporting cast is great (kids and adults), but the show is about Rose. The closing song in the musical is an Audra MacDonald tour de force. I am so happy that I finally saw Gypsy and I think you will, too."

Gypsy is a must-see
"Audra McDonald is sensational in Gypsy. Her performance is one of the best that I’ve ever seen and I’ve been to a number of Broadway productions. She’s also supported by a wonderful cast. The feeling in the audience was electric - we knew we were seeing something special. "

"I thought that the performances, orchestra, and the direction of the play was TOP NOTCH. George C. Wolfe, Audra McDonald and the cast have taken what is a well known show and given it a new and entertaining spin. "

Gypsy Hits it out of the Theater
"Like many, I'm familiar with the Broadway Belters who played Rose in previous versions of this show. That said, I was unprepared for the sharp difference between Ms. McDonalds singing when compared to Lansbury, Daly, Lupone (though she comes the closest in terms of classical training), Peters and Rosalind Russell. But it's not only Audra who makes the show work. She is surrounded by strong supporting acting and, yes, lots of shrill and screechy voiced children (some of which is purposely included to contrast the talent but limitations of Rose's younger daughter, June, with those of overlooked and underappreciated Louise who shines in a huge way near the end of the show). This caused the first act to drag a bit, especially when Rose insists that a two-man cow clumsily accompany June which is (again) purposely hideous, showing just how tone deaf and blind Rose is to her talents as a producer as well as a stage mother. You'll recognize many of the show's tunes and all are performed perfectly. Audra/Rose takes your breath away once the reality of idyllic life collapses all around her, with her rendition of "Rose's Turn". All of us broke into a premature standing O as I expect many have and will. The theater is small when compared to others I've visited but it made the setting much more intimate and the audience seemed absolutely mesmerized as a result. The minor criticism of the show running long (the second act is well over an hour which is unusual, with the time adding up to 2 hours 45 minutes), it's small when balanced with the sheer delight you feel watching the seasoned pro, McDonald lead the way in her superb performance, as if to say, "Just follow me. This is gonna be fun!""

Run to Audra in Gypsy
"The whole cast was exceptional including of course Danny Burstein. Great production, great voices, and the musical is of course a classic. Audra McDonald made the role her own. She had big shoes to fill from her predecessors, but she filled them like the powerhouse of a singer and actress that she is. Bravo!!"

Audra McDonald's performance is masterclass
"Audra McDonald's performance was simply the best. As a Black woman and a mother who wants the best for children, the lyrics hit differently, especially Everything Is Coming Up Roses. The performance of adult Baby June and Louise as well as Herbie were stellar. This revival is one of the best! "

Gypsy
"The quality of acting and singing from the entire cast, and most notably the amazing Audra McDonald, kept the audience on the edge of our seats - never missing a a beat. From Rose’s emotional second act soliloquy, that brought the audience to our feet, to the comedic timing that kept the pace of story moving and the audience loving each character. This was an award winning performance!!"

Audra is a Broadway star!
"I liked the staging and choreography. Both the dancing and scenery were fun to watch and actors/dancers used the space creatively. I loved Gypsy's dressing room, too. Audra was simply fabulous. Her acting was heartfelt and her singing was show stopping. "

The marquee quote was no exaggeration!
"There are very few who could hold a candle to Audra McDonald's epic performance. The rest of the cast was also excellent, including Joy Woods' understudy, Shanel Bailey, who was making her debut. I appreciated that Mama Rose seemed to have actual affection for Louise, making her character somewhat sympathetic. In the play, Louise's transformation from sweet and completely unassuming to self-assured happens almost instantly, but Ms. Bailey played both convincingly. Shout out to Kevin Csolak, Lili Thomas, Melinda Hull and Lesli Margherita for making the most of their featured numbers, also to Danny Burstein for somehow making Herbie something more than a doormat. Marley Gomes and Summer Rae Daney were also excellent as Baby June and Baby Louise (note: adding colorism to the mix was a bold and resonant touch). Great costumes, great sets, great lighting, but this show really hinges on Mama Rose. The marquee says: "Audra McDonald is a revelation." Amen to that."

Light The Lights! Audra’s Gypsy Takes the Great White Way By Sroem
"What a show. Brilliant performers giving deeply felt, beautifully sung , funny performances anchored by the Sun, herself. Audra Macdonald. Hers was the most furious, poignant, brilliantly sung Rose I’ve ever seen. And her Rose’s Turn has to be seen to be believed. We saw a performance with an understudy for Louise. I think it was her first performance and she was wonderful. "

About Gypsy

Gypsy is the landmark Broadway musical about a domineering mother in the early 20th Century who will do anything to make her young daughters Vaudeville stars. Inspired by the early life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, this new production is directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, and is the musical that introduced the hit songs “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Let Me Entertain You,“ and “You Gotta Get a Gimmick.”
