An enjoyable story.
""Gypsy” is a solid theatrical experience marked by strong performances and engaging music. McDonald delivers a commendable portrayal of Mama Rose, showcasing her vocal talent throughout the show. While there are a few lulls in pacing, the humor embedded in the script keeps the audience entertained. The storyline is interesting, focusing on the complexities of ambition and family dynamics, which adds depth to the characters. Overall, the production balances moments of levity with poignant themes, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of musical theater."

Audra & cast were wonderful!
"The show is a bit long. A few musical numbers could have been cut and not disturb the flow of the production. Other than that, the acting and singing was awesome. Audra is such a talent!"

Volume kept too high-
"Audra McDonald is an excellent singer whose voice can be nuanced. I was disappointed that she sang over loudly throughout ( or was miced too loudly)as was the whole cast.I think in so doing the characters lost some depth unnecessarily."

Audra is amazing
"The storyline is important, but the beginning was lacking due to the kiddie nature. However, the 2nd part was stronger, and Audra is absolutely the most amazing of any performer I have ever seen! "

Great show, passionate yet compassionate
"Some of the work (esp those by the actresses playing Baby June) can be histrionic, shrieking and trying much too hard. Small quibble, but the show reimagines the character of Rose in a more forgiving light. That last song is earned and delivered by Ms. McDonald. ❤️"

Production has shortcomings
"Without Act Two this would have been a 2 star review. Orchestra Row M great seats. Audio was too high pitched, too loud, and generally not fun during Act One. Love Audra as a singer and actor but that audio tanked it for me. Second short Act was fabulous in all respects. Great cast throughout. Lots of foul language and some suggestive acts. Would not take children under 16, from a midwesterner so take that for what its worth to you."

Retro… seems dated.
"The younger actors were very talented. Older members seemed to overact, over emote , scream their lines. Seemed very retro in a not so good way.,
The show seems dated… not a good reprisal.,"

This Gypsy tries too hard
"This Gypsy didn't touch us. Everyone in the (albeit hardworking) cast tried their best, but tried too hard. We felt like they were always screaming at us.
We have been admirers of Ms. McDonald, but felt Gypsy is not a role for her, her voice unsuited to this role. (Again, we felt she was screaming "please love me in this role" all evening.)
Gypsy has a great score (Kudos to the orchestra), but does it really need to be revived again?
Sets and costumes were mid.
Unfortunately, this Gypsy left us unsatisfied."

too much shouting
"I do not enjoy acting by shouting and while Audra's voice was great, I didn't see the need for all the anger in her portrayal. It was also bit long."

Audra was amazing but ...
"Aside from the lead’s star power—although she occasionally overbelted her otherwise beautiful voice when the moment called for a forceful yet more restrained delivery—the play itself felt middling. Its cult-classic status is understandable, given how many people remain enchanted by it; however, the abrupt transitions between the boys and their adult selves, along with the temporal jumps, felt disjointed and pulled focus away from the central theme. Just seems...unnecessary and old-fashioned
"The cast is undoubtedly talented. The but the choice to mount this show and the design choices for costumes, blocking, SET (oh the set...just blah) were just very outdated and stale. Also, I love Audra, but if your character's name is descending in lights...you need to belt the last note of the song. "

Wonky 2nd act and closing
"I wanted to LOVE this. After all, Audra McDonald, the Grande Dame of Broadway headlined. But, the guttural more earthy essence of Rose was lost in a beautifully refined and polished voice. Also, the second act fizzled. I know the ending notoriously has caused previous productions troubles. I hope they re-work it. I think with a keen eye to tweak and edit, this show could be so much more. I saw it during the first week of previews so there is plenty of time to make it shine! "

Don't Get the Hype
"I'm an avid broadway show fan. I see at least 4 new shows a year. People raved about Gypsy, but it did not live up to its hype. I understand the original book was kept, but the songs were too long and repetitive. The show could have been much shorter and I would have given a very different review. And Audra McDonald is an amazing actress but her singing was not praiseworthy in this show. Perhaps the songs do her no justice. "

LOUD and SCREETCHY! UGH
"Some acting (boyfriend), dancing, comedy (the 3 strippers) was very good. But the lead was so loud, unclear, and one dimensional from the first words. She and some others were so loud and high-pitched my iWatch kept going off--"You are in danger of hearing damage!" We expected artistic quality from broadway, certainly not physical discomfort. And it was a bit boring and irregular and "not tight"--there was misaligned quality or tone of the actors and scenes. Some of our group wanted to leave at intermission. "

Dramatic but not enjoyable.
"Audra McDonald is an incredible actor and singer. However she made the character of Rose, the narcissistic, self-absorbed, selfish mother of her two children, one of whom she was determinied to make a star so unlikeable it was painful to watch this show. "

About
Gypsy
Gypsy is the landmark Broadway musical about a domineering mother in the early 20th Century who will do anything to make her young daughters Vaudeville stars. Inspired by the early life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, this new production is directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, and is the musical that introduced the hit songs “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Let Me Entertain You,“ and “You Gotta Get a Gimmick.”
