Wonderful show with slight complaints
"The music, set, and theatrical design were wonderful. A well-known myth told in a very refreshing way. J. Harrison Ghee truly steals the show, phenomenal Hermes, and I honestly cannot picture anyone better than them to play the role. Persephone and Hades were also brilliant. My only complaint was that Eurydice, played by Jordan Tyson, had a baby voice-ala Britney spears- for 80% of the show. In the first part of Flowers her voice was gorgeous beautiful and felt great, but for the rest of the show it was off-putting everytime I heard them sing. Nonetheless, a great show that was heart wrenching."

New cast, strong energy
"The new principal cast was very good and generally on par with the original cast. Hermes, Orpheus, Persephone and Hades were particularly strong. Music is great. Enjoyable evening.
Generally, children under the age of 13 would likely not enjoy this show as opposed to other subject matters."

Great show, especially the music is amazing
"Loved it, but I do recommend lower level seats; we were seated at the upper (second) balcony and it was difficult to enjoy the music and follow the conversation."

Great show!
"Upbeat with quality performers! Extremely enjoyable!! A bit sad at the end. I recommended familiarizing yourself with the Greek myth ahead of time. "

Good Show, First Half Confusing..
"Overall, this was a wonderful performance. The cast were very talented and we enjoyed the singing and dancing. Knowing the original Greek myth, we were a bit confused with Orpheus and Eurydice’s meeting in the first half. Was that a diner? We really wished the writer would have started the story with them already engaged. The second half was much more familiar and enjoyable."

I enjoyed it more than my wife
"I think the key was that I knew the story better before it started. My wife was trying to follow the nuances of the story and could not enjoy the performances as much. Maybe do a bit of research before you go so you can focus on the talented cast. We had the understudy for Orpheus. I cannot say I liked his voice as much as the others."

Highly recommend
"A great rendition of the tale or Orpheus and Eurydice. If you do not know much about Greek mythology I recommend brushing up a bit. However, if you read through the playbill beforehand they do a great job at setting the scene. "

. Infused with Young blood, the script/ lyric's- the acting all superb
"Can’t think of what I did not like - honestly. It’s new innovative - maybe an age old story yet enjoyed the retelling. All The actors were amazing - maybe there Are other innovative productions - and I don’t know about them. I loved the creative twist to the whole theme "

"It was just ok for me after seeing 5 others this week. Talent was good. Not as exhilarating as others that had more prop and costume changes that we saw. Talent was good. "

Excellent performance and design, somewhat thin story.
"The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice can be told in a single paragraph--that's its power and its limitation. *Hadestown* gets creative with the myth, the characters' motivations, and contemporary applications, but in the end, one can't help feeling that the story is thin. Nonetheless, the performances are terrific. My young-adult children, who know all the songs, loved the show and thought it the highlight of our visit to New York. I wasn't moved by the show, but I was entertained and impressed. Kudos to the designers and all the performers. "

High energy show
"Really enjoyable show. Engaging music and performances retell a classic myth with some contemporary spin. We attended with a big family group and everyone enjoyed it. Content was appropriate for children and adults."

Rousing musical with live music
"I loved the use of Greek myth for a storyline. However the delivery came across a honey tonk, which I didn’t expect. The audience age averaged 16 and there was so much audience hooting and yelling hat it took away from the performance. The volume of the performance during the first half was almost enough to drive us to leave the theater. Perhaps in a better, larger venue, with seats that weren’t so tight, and a more sophisticated audience we would have liked it better. The performance was polished. The music was great. "

Boring. Not exactly my cup of tea.
"There were funny moments and dull moments. I felt bored in the middle of the show. Lyrics were not easy to comprehend. Some part of singing were high pitched not melodic. Male protagonist had a nice voice and really delivered emotionally with his guitar. The repetitive motion from supporting performers was boring. Ending part was powerful. Story line was metaphorical and profound. Yet sitting in a cramped space with very limited leg room, super busy and unavailable restroom (should have renovated for more toilets) and unfriendly impolite staff didn't make my experience pleasant. On the fence
"The musical is well performed and choreographed well, but it is held back my mid scores and storyline. Would only recommend if you really like jazz as the music relies heavily on that genre. "

Hadestown: A Bit of Hell on Earth
"Interesting but underdone: this almost-classic love story staged between two worlds. Strong start, but then both script and direction fizzle despite the powerful themes and forces supposedly at play. The potential for subtlety and nuance seems under-explored despite the actors, for the most part, doing their work with admirable commitment. Characterization feels somewhat incomplete. Possibly because of casting, and costuming. One is left feeling that all the leads need to be more complex, more conflicted, more mired in their moral and emotional dilemmas and subsequently more triumphant in their eventual resolutions. Some of the gimmicky staging looks ok, but falls short of goose pimples and does not help much in the struggle for excellence. Needs tightening all around. Oh to have been there during development !!! But certainly go see it and decide for yourself. "

Great Talent but story fell short a bit
"Loved the overall talent and incredible voices but the story fell short for me. With all the hype this play has gotten I guess I expected more. I found the story a little hard to follow and a bit rushed - especially the connection between Orpheus and Eurydice. I am glad I didn't bring my tween girls to this (they love broadway) but I think they might have been bored and confused. Don't get me wrong the singing and talent was incredible just didn't love the execution of the story."

Good but not great
"The songs were excellent; the stage was used in an interesting way. But there was no character development, even though I know it was on Hades and Persephine. It was short and the theater space was so small I barely had room for my knees. "

About
Hadestown
Welcome to Hadestown, where a song can change your fate. This acclaimed new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today… and always.
Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, singers, dancers, and musicians, Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.
