Story

At a high school in a rural town in Georgia, an English class is studying The Crucible, but the students are more preoccupied with navigating young love, sex ed, and a few school scandals. As they delve into the American classic, the students begin to question the play’s perspective and the validity of naming John Proctor the show’s hero. With deep wells of passion and biting humor, John Proctor is the Villain is a new comedy from a major new American voice, capturing a generation in mid- transformation, running on pop music, optimism, and fury, and discovering that their future is not bound by the past.

A must see!
"John Proctor is the Villain should be part of the curriculum whenever The Crucible is taught. Such an important perspective that should not be overlooked."

Fantastic Play!!
"This show was incredible! We loved the overall themes and each of the characters in it, We also enjoyed the set and the story of the play and how it all came to a head at the end. It may be a play set in 2018, but the themes, the characters and the play itself relate heavily to 2025. 5/5, would definitely recommend to teenagers and parents. "

They nailed it!
"Having taught the Crucible numerous times, I was most enthralled with the portrayal of that experience. I often thought about the problematic nature of John Proctor’s actions. I felt that the message was timely, sad and necessary."

The Salem Witch Trials are as timely as today's news
""The play is the main character," said my granddaughter when I asked which actor's role she liked best. I think she is right. This very, young, spirited and talented group of actors brings to life a new playwright's vision, humor, seriousness and timeliness. That a grandmother in her seventies and a teenage granddaughter can both relate to this storyline is recommendation enough! Witchhunt has as much currency today as it did during the 1600s Salem Witch Trials. See this play and engage with its strong message, its humor and its pathos. You will be rewarded."

Cast, Score & Set 10/10
"The set for JPITV is absolutely fantastic. It brought you right into the plot. It was so realistic. The cast was phenomenal. Every element, pacing, costume and lighting elevated what the cast brought to the show. It is a tough subject and handled well. I would recommend this enthusiastically."

Passionate, Moving, Smart
"Wow, what a powerful play and perfect to see with my daughter who is about to take AP English. It was powerful and moving and I loved the expressive way the language made me think about modern interpretations of literature. It was accessible and funny and entertaining, all while revealing insightful messages about feminism, literature, high school dynamics - and forcing us to think differently in the face of trauma."

Crowd-pleasing as well as thoughtful.
"Lots and lots of things to think about in a show that also never stops entertaining you. You might not agree with every revisionist take on The Crucible, but it is a chewy perspective. Very good performances by every cast member. We had two understudies in a matinee and there did not seem to be any penalty in passion or impact. The ensemble works very well together. "
