About Yellow Face on Broadway

Everything you need to know about the show.

The Story

Tony Award ® winner and three-time Pulitzer finalist David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) will make his Roundabout debut with the Broadway premiere of Yellow Face, his hilarious is-he-or-isn’t-he comedy of identity, show business, and (perhaps) autobiography. Starring Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman (Violet).

In this play inspired by real events, the playwright’s fictionalized doppelgänger protests yellowface casting in Miss Saigon, only to mistakenly cast a white actor as the Asian lead in his own play. This Obie Award-winning and Pulitzer finalist play is a laugh-out-loud farce about the complexities of race.

This show makes the society more conscious about Asians.
"I’m an Asian. No one looked at me in the theater before the show. But after the show, everyone stared at me. This show defeats the purpose of addressing a racial issue in the USA, but it actually makes audience be more aware of Asians in their surroundings and it inputs new racist ideas of Asians they learned from the show. A humorous, bold, and thought-provoking reflection on identity and race.
"“Yellow Face" is both humorous and thought-provoking. It pushes boundaries and encourages deep reflection on how we all contribute to the larger narratives surrounding race and identity. The work challenges audiences to consider how others are represented and prompts them to think about their own roles in shaping the stories of those around them."

Hilarity and Truth
"This show was funny and relevant. Daniel Dae Kim and Ryan Eggold were a joy to watch live. The serious characters you’re used to seeing Kim in just makes his comedic performance in Yellow Face that much more entertaining. His physical comedy was superb! Eggold and Kim are both quite underrated by Hollywood standards as they both deliver great comedic timing in Yellow Face for two actors who have played pretty serious roles on television for years. I highly recommend you catch the show before it wraps."

Don’t ever believe race doesn’t matter
"Wonderful cast in a breezy story that you initially believed was going to be about Daniel Dae Kim’s character, who personifies the actual playwright, David Henry Hwang. Through the laughs of what seem to be lightweight issues and problems centered around that character, you come to understand how issues of identity and race still are deeply embedded in the American experience. The show is almost too literate for most Americans, but allows one to see the truth through the intensely personal story. Asian Americans just can’t avoid the issue of race, no matter where we live in America or whatever our choice of career. A substantive message delivered in a accessible package."
