June 17, 2012

David Ives

The Story:
Venus in Fur goes behind the scenes at an audition, where a playwright/director and a mysterious young actress blur the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, and love and sex. Armed with a bag of S&M gear and period costumes, the actress pulls the playwright into reading his own script, with breaks to argue about the meaning of the story.

Based On:
The play was inspired by Venus in Furs, Leopold Sacher-Masoch’s 1870 erotic novel, which became infamous after the author’s last name was used to coin the term “sado-masochism” for the interplay of sex and power depicted in the book.

Show History:
Venus in Fur premiered off-Broadway at Classic Stage Company on January 26, 2010, starring Nina Arianda and Wes Bentley. Manhattan Theatre Club transferred the play to Broadway in a production starring Arianda and Hugh Dancy.

Manhattan Theatre Club (Lynne Meadow, Barry Grove), Jon B. Platt, Scott Landis, Classic Stage Company
