About Midnight

Everything you need to know about the show.

The Story

Set in the American South during the 19th century, Midnight explores love, identity, empathy and the humanity that connects us across the boundaries of race, class and expectation. Featuring a wholly sung-through score that blends gospel, rhythm and blues, pop, rock, folk, opera and musical theater, the show follows twelve interconnected lives—six Black characters and six white characters—whose relationships challenge the worlds they have inherited and the assumptions they carry. As friendships deepen, romances blossom and beliefs are tested, the characters of Midnight are forced to confront what it truly means to understand another person’s experience.

Phenomenal show

"The acting and music was top notch. The story was ingenious and made me cry. I absolutely loved it. Needs to be on Broadway and I wish it would come here to Providence Rhode Island PPAC theater. "

A Combination of Rent and Hamilton

"This show was the best theatrical experience my wife and I have had in the last decade. The depth of the talented cast left us awestruck. Todrick Hall is a genius - his abilities to direct, choreograph, write, act and sing were beyond incredible. The show was a tour de force - overwhelming power amplified by a cast, whose every member, delivered an exceptional performance. Each member was fully engaged and as a result the consistent excellence of vocals, dance and acting delivered a memorable evening of emotional drama of which we will tell others and will not soon forget. I am cheering for this show to make it to Broadway so it can receive the deserved recognition for its unique and exceptional effort, as well as its powerful message of compassion and understanding."

MIDNIGHT – A Riveting and Soul-Stirring Theatrical Experience!

"MIDNIGHT was an exceptional production from beginning to end. The performances by the entire cast were riveting, emotionally powerful, and truly extraordinary. It is almost unprecedented to witness EVERY SINGLE member of the cast being so exceptionally talented…, until you go see MIDNIGHT, which sets a new theatrical standard while being moved by one of the most impactful life changing stories told in song! A special acknowledgment to Ms. Ayana George, who portrays Ethel, for her outstanding performance, who deserves an EGOT from this performance alone! And to the phenomenal King of all things Amazing, Mr. Todrick Hall, whose brilliant creative vision, direction, choreography, musicality and storytelling brought this incredibly compelling production to life. What makes MIDNIGHT particularly impactful is how it intertwines America’s social history with the deeply personal experiences of its characters. It challenges us to examine the influence of history, the circumstances we inherit, the assumptions we carry, and the profound importance of walking in someone else’s shoes. Through its divine storytelling, it masterfully weaves together past, present, and future, with moments of both foreshadowing and reflection. The performances reach far beyond entertainment. They penetrate the very core of your SOUL and shines a light into the purest essence of what it means to be human. Ultimately, MIDNIGHT delivers a powerful reminder that, regardless of our backgrounds, circumstances, or differences, every human being deserves dignity, freedom, respect, and most of all, LOVE. A truly moving experience that stays with you long after the curtain falls. I just happened to be lucky enough to come across a rehearsal clip on Instagram— and made my way from the ATL to NYC to see this sensation. Highly recommend!! BRAVO!!!🔥 "

Phenomenal, moving, smart

"This show is excellent. I HAD A ROLLERCOASTER OF EMOTIONS. I think the show blends genres and had a balance of ups and downs. It strategically situates the idea of race and sexuality in a way that makes you reflect on your own bias. It WILL change you. Todrick Hall is a genius and I aplaude him in all the hats he wore to bring this show to the stage. A MUST SEE! I CAN'T IMAGINE IT NOT MAKING IT TO BROADWAY FOR AN EXTENDED RUN."

ABSOLUTELY A MUST-SEE!!

"Midnight was a remarkable Broadway experience from beginning to end. Every detail felt carefully considered, and the production drew me in from the very first moment. The cast’s powerful singing, expressive acting, and beautifully executed choreography worked together to create a show that was both entertaining and deeply engaging. I found myself fully invested throughout the entire performance. Todrick Hall and the whole cast and creative team deserve to be proud of what they’ve created. Midnight has the heart, talent, and theatrical magic to stand alongside Broadway’s great musicals. I hope it has a long, successful run—one as enduring as The Lion King because this is the kind of show audiences should get to enjoy for years to come. "

Superbly cast controversial think piece challenging biases

"The actors: One of the strongest casts I’ve ever seen. The acting was superb, the vocals were phenomenal, and the chemistry was (mostly) there. The story: This is not a romance, nor is it a slavery story. This is a study of human nature, of growth and change, of uncertainty and the unknown. It grabs controversy by the collar and shoves it in your face, Ready Or Not (pun intended). It doesn’t tell you WHAT to think. It only demands that you do. The runtime (2hrs 45min) seems too long, but it did NOT feel that way. Time flew by and I still wanted more. My husband (who is NOT usually a theatre guy) agreed that it felt more like maybe an hour and a half, and a fast one at that. The music: Nearly every piece had me either sobbing or laughing. None of the music was filler or token. It told and moved the story, and did it powerfully every time. The choreography: Every movement was filled with meaning. From the “Snake People” in Act I to “Lily’s House-Chair Path” in Act II, there’s what you see on the surface and the deeper visual as it relates to each character and scene. The set: The first thing you see when you enter the house and the last thing you see when you leave, no detail was left behind. Time is referenced in multiple ways and you’re reminded in every scene of who holds the power in this story, especially with certain set pieces always there above the main action. I LOVED the close proximity that the front row provided to the stage and actors, as well. Many people have complained that no one will say what this show is “really” about. I’ll tell you. It’s about the void that the future holds for everyone. We know how the 19th century ended. We know what happened next. The people living it didn’t have that luxury. And so we live, too. We’ve all been assigned a role not of our choosing. Black? White? Rich? Poor? Powerful? Powerless? How will we play our role? Will we change the world around us? Or will we find ourselves changed by the world? THIS is Midnight."
