About Liberation on Broadway

Everything you need to know about the show.

The Story

It's 1970: somewhere in Ohio, six women meet on a basement basketball court, determined to shake up their lives and change the world. Fifty years later, one of their daughters tries to understand where things fell apart. A provocative, wildly theatrical world premiere that poses vital questions about friendship, legacy, and the true meaning of liberation.

"An enthralling, emotional knockout and the first must see play of the season. Mothers, take your friends and daughters, and vice versa."

"Powerfully moving and consistently funny. An unadulterated pleasure. If there is a show that can make the case for a Tony Award for best ensemble, it’s this one."

"Go see Liberation, people! Both times I’ve seen Bess Wohl’s THRILLING play, I’ve felt unprepared for the emotional wallop it lands."

What a fabulous show!
"Historically, many of us actively participated in the events cited. This portrayal through five women’s lives is both timely ( how far have we come?) and done with a touch of humor. We loved it!!"

Bringing it on home
"This show is totally relevant today. Everyone asks themselves what do I do now? How do we stop the maniac in office? And this show points the way. I think that's just spectacular. Also, we laughed heartily and a lot, and I haven't laughed like that in some time. It was laughing at myself and all the things so familiar, but I believe anyone who sees this show will enjoy the hell out of it an so many levels. It's insightful and fun and deeply moving. Brava!"

I laughed I cried...
"Such a simple set, such a simple production. Such a powerful delivery. A message of the possibilities of solidarity and love. Not dogmatic, not strident. It helped me remember that there really are still good, smart, decent people. We all need to unite to continue the march toward universal brotherhood, sisterhood, humanity. "

For our mothers….
"I Saw the play Liberation...Wow!! For me, it carries the echo of my mother's life and convictions. I felt her legacy threaded through many moments. I believe the audience was filled with many women with the same sentiment. My Mom would have loved it❤️"

Inspiring show
"I left inspired to continue pushing for women’s rights. I loved that the show was funny and emotional. The acting was superb. One suggestion I have (if I can be so bold) is to have a totally different actress play the older mother instead of an actress who we’ve already experienced. Not that she wasn’t good; at that moment I expected the mother to come in from back stage. The actress who played the younger mother was great. "

Act two is remarkable
"At Intermission, I was afraid the play was giving a shallow view of the 70s scene, but the 2nd Act redeemed all. Very moving exploration of converging opinions and options. The excellent ensemble acting elevated my experience. I lived the events that inspired the playwright. It meant a lot for me to see this play at this moment. I was lucky to see it with my neighbor and we both took away a lot from the show. A friend had told me to grab a girlfriend and go. So glad I did."

"Acting ensemble was superb. I “knew “ those women. I participated in similar groups in the 70’s . Outstanding writing. Set and costumes were perfect "
