Key Takeaways

  • September is a great time to see Broadway as summer crowds ease and NYC shifts into fall.
  • New fall Broadway shows often begin previews in September, giving theater fans an early look before reviews and buzz build.
  • NYC Broadway Week may offer ticket savings with 2-for-1 deals on select shows, typically during September.
  • Pack light layers for September weather with warm days, cooler evenings, and occasional rain.

September brings a fresh energy to Broadway as summer winds down and New York City shifts into fall. With Labor Day weekend, back-to-school season, and cooler evenings on the horizon, it’s a great month to enjoy a Broadway show while exploring Times Square before the busiest holiday travel months begin.

With shorter lines, new fall shows previews, and comfortable, crisp air, it couldn’t be a better time to book a Broadway outing.

Whether you’re planning a weekend trip, visiting NYC for the first time, or looking for a night out after summer, this guide will help you make the most of your September Broadway experience.

What to Expect in September

September is a great month to see a Broadway show in New York City. As summer travel winds down after Labor Day, the city shifts into fall mode: students return to school, locals settle back into their routines, and the Broadway season starts building momentum again.

September is also when the fall theater season begins to pick up. New shows often begin previews in September and early fall, giving theater fans a chance to see productions before they officially open and start generating reviews, word of mouth, and awards-season buzz. New York Theatre Guide describes September as the moment when “fall, school, and theatre” begin in earnest, with the Broadway season getting into full swing.

Tip: September can be a smart month for flexible Broadway ticket buyers. Demand may be lighter than peak summer or holiday periods, but popular long-running musicals and buzzy new productions can still sell quickly, especially on weekends.

September also usually brings the fall edition of NYC Broadway Week, a popular ticket promotion that offers 2-for-1 tickets to select Broadway shows. The 2025 fall edition included 24 participating productions, and the promotion typically takes place in September. If you’re looking to save on Broadway tickets, this is a good time to check for official Broadway discounts and deals.

Weather-wise, September is one of the most comfortable months to visit NYC. Expect warm early-fall days, cooler evenings, and a lively atmosphere around Times Square without the full intensity of summer crowds. It’s a great month to pair a Broadway show with dinner, sightseeing, or a walk through Midtown before curtain.

Hadestown

Hadestown

Should I arrive early at my Broadway show?

It is always recommended to avoid the stress of rushing through long lines of security and bag checks by arriving at least 30 minutes early. Fortunately, all theaters are well air-conditioned, so you can cool off and enjoy an ice-cold refreshment from the theater’s concession stand.

Regardless of the weather, it’s always a treat to take your time and get settled in before the show begins. Settling into your seat early is especially helpful when your seat is located towards the middle of your row.

Many performances offer special activities to enjoy beforehand, such as photo opportunities and show-related merchandise. By arriving early, you’ll be able to avoid the hassle and chaos of long lines and leave yourself with ample time to relax in your seat before the show begins.

Theaters typically open their doors an hour before the show begins. See more details on your specific theater to prepare in advance.

What's the NYC Weather like in September?

September in NYC is a welcome transition from summer into fall, with warm days, cooler evenings, and generally comfortable weather for exploring the city. Expect average highs around 76°F/24°C early in the month, with temperatures gradually cooling as fall approaches. We’d suggest packing light layers, comfortable walking shoes, and a jacket or sweater for evenings out after your show. There can still be a few humid days or the occasional rain shower, so a compact umbrella isn’t a bad idea. To enjoy both NYC and Broadway in comfort, dress for warm daytime weather. As we normally suggest, keep an extra layer handy once the sun goes down, just in case.
