Happy New Year! January is special time of year on Broadway; the holiday season vibes still linger as the city transitions itself into a quieter, calmer post-holiday season.
In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to prepare yourself for enjoying a January show coupled with winter festivities and new-years excitement.
What's Broadway like in January?
January is quiet compared to other months of the year, meaning it's the perfect time to take advantage of discounted tickets and lighter crowds. If you’re looking to start the year off budget-conscious, January is a great opportunity to enjoy NYC in its winter glory and catch a show without the holiday price tag.
January also hosts quite possibly the best winter promotion you can get — a two-for-one price tag!
From January 20th to February 12th, or “Broadway Week,” you can take advantage of two tickets to a musical, play, or comedy, for the price of one. Tickets for participating performances go live January 7th, 2026.

What’s the NYC Weather like in January?
The festive season in NYC isn’t complete without a chill in the air. Expect cold temperatures (average high around 39°F/4°C) and we'd suggesting planning to bring winter coats, hats, and gloves. There's always a chance we'll get a wintery mix (snow, sleet, rain) so adding comfortable boots, just in case, isn't a bad idea if you plan on doing a lot of walking. A few inches of snow is typical throughout January in NYC. To enjoy both the city and the theater in comfort, be sure to bundle up with warm layers.
Do Broadway Theaters Offer Coat Checks?
Yes, but because most Broadway houses are historic landmarks built in the early 1900s, space is at a premium. About half of the 41 theaters offer coat check services, and almost all of them charge for the convenience ($2-$5 per item). It's worth noting that Broadway theaters often keep cool for the performers, so you may want to consider layering, just in case. As an alternative, you can place your coat in your lap or below your chair.
Tips: The line for the coat check can get long right before the curtain. Aim to be at the theater at least 30 minutes before showtime. Also, if a theater does not have a coat check, you can sometimes check your bags at a nearby hotel.
