What’s the NYC Weather like in January?

The festive season in NYC isn’t complete without a chill in the air. Expect cold temperatures (average high around 39°F/4°C) and we'd suggesting planning to bring winter coats, hats, and gloves. There's always a chance we'll get a wintery mix (snow, sleet, rain) so adding comfortable boots, just in case, isn't a bad idea if you plan on doing a lot of walking. A few inches of snow is typical throughout January in NYC. To enjoy both the city and the theater in comfort, be sure to bundle up with warm layers.

Do Broadway Theaters Offer Coat Checks?

Yes, but because most Broadway houses are historic landmarks built in the early 1900s, space is at a premium. About half of the 41 theaters offer coat check services, and almost all of them charge for the convenience ($2-$5 per item). It's worth noting that Broadway theaters often keep cool for the performers, so you may want to consider layering, just in case. As an alternative, you can place your coat in your lap or below your chair.

Tips: The line for the coat check can get long right before the curtain. Aim to be at the theater at least 30 minutes before showtime. Also, if a theater does not have a coat check, you can sometimes check your bags at a nearby hotel.
