Key Takeaways

  • August is a busy late-summer month on Broadway, with families, tourists, and locals filling Times Square before fall begins.
  • Book ahead for popular musicals and family-friendly shows, especially for weekends, matinees, and performances before Labor Day.
  • Watch for late-summer deals and Broadway Week announcements, which are often tied to August sales and September performances.
  • Catch limited-run shows before they close, as August can mark the final chance to see productions before the fall season arrives.
  • Broadway is a smart break from NYC’s summer heat, offering an air-conditioned activity between sightseeing, shopping, or dinner plans.

The dog days of summer are (almost) over! August in NYC means Broadway is still bustling with visitors from around the world.

August is the final stretch of summer on Broadway, with Times Square buzzing, long sunny days, and plenty of energy before the city shifts into fall. It’s a popular month for tourists, families, and locals looking to pair a Broadway show with a summer day in New York City.

Whether you’re planning a matinee between sightseeing stops or an evening performance after dinner near Times Square, August is a great time to experience Broadway. This guide covers what to know before you go, from choosing a show to making the most of your visit.

What's Broadway like in August?

August is a popular month for families, students, and late-summer travelers to see a Broadway show before the back-to-school season begins. With warm weather, long days, and plenty of visitors in New York City, Times Square and the Theater District can feel especially lively, particularly around matinee performances and weekend shows.

It’s also a great time to make Broadway part of a summer NYC itinerary. Many visitors look for an air-conditioned afternoon or evening activity after sightseeing, shopping, or exploring the city, making Broadway a smart choice during the hottest part of the year.

Tip: August can be a strong month for family-friendly shows and popular musicals. If you’re planning to see a show before Labor Day Weekend, we suggest buying tickets in advance, especially for weekend performances and matinees.

August also leads into the fall theater season, when new productions may begin building buzz and NYC Broadway Week offers are often announced for late-summer or early-fall performances (traditionally on sale in August for performances in September).

As the summer cools down, look out for late-summer discounts such as weekday deals or promotional packages. You just might find the best price around for the show you’ve been wanting to see. Crowds are still high, so it’s always best to book in advance to secure your ideal seats at a great deal.

August will also bring a close to many limited-run shows to make way for new releases. Take this time to catch a show before the curtains draw!

What is a “Limited Run” show?

A “limited run” show refers to a Broadway show that simultaneously sets the first and final performance dates. The majority of limited runs are plays, but you’ll also find some Broadway musicals doing limited runs.

Broadway is famous for its "open runs" - where a show opens with the hopes of playing every single week for the next 20+ years! The Phantom of the Opera closed on April 16, 2023, after 35 years on Broadway, while both Chicago and The Lion King are still running after more than 28 years since their openings.

What's the NYC Weather like in August?

August in NYC is still very much summer, with hot temperatures, humid days, and plenty of sunshine. Expect average highs around 84°F/29°C, though it can feel warmer when you’re out walking around the city. We’d suggest packing lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen for daytime exploring before your show. Summer rain showers or thunderstorms can pop up, so a compact umbrella is always a smart addition. To enjoy both NYC and Broadway in comfort, dress for the heat outside, but be ready for the cool air conditioning once you step inside the theater.
